Snowmen

We continued our chilly study of snow and ice this week with the theme of snowmen.  The kids had a blast in the sensory tub making their own snow creations with packing peanuts and water!
We continued to practice writing our last name, this time we wrote our last name on snowballs and built some really tall snowmen!
We wrote our names in "snow" a.k.a. shaving cream!
We played a game that had us rolling the dice and cutting out the appropriate part to build our snowman.
We used different sized jars to paint snowmen independently at the art table.
Wrote another class book about our favorite things to do in the snow.
And read a lot of snowy book

in our really chilly reading igloo!
It was another great week with an awesome group of kids.  I am so blessed to be their teacher and feel so lucky to be a part of their learning experience.

Ice and Snow

We had a lot of icy cold fun exploring ice and snow!  We started the week playing a game that allowed the kids to explore many different ways to melt ice.  They blew on the ice, held it in their hand, sprinkled salt on it, and even floated it in warm water!  Throughout the course of the game they discovered that salt and warm water worked the best!  They were rolling the dice and chanting for 5 and 6 (the numbers that correlated with salt and warm water).
They practiced writing their last names in "snow".
They decorated their last name with "snowballs."
And we had a blast using the parachute to make snowballs fly in the air!
We even made a tent!  It was a great way to get some exercises indoors on these cold, cold days!
Check out how big and smart these kiddos are getting!  We are now reading predictable books as a whole group!  They are working so hard to follow along with their friends.  Did your child read Bears, Bears, Bears to you?

They are really starting to look like Kindergartners!  I am so proud of them.

Arctic Animals

Despite having a short week, we had a lot of chilly fun here at LAP!  We started the week with a science experiment that taught the kids about polar animals and how they stay warm.  First we got a bowl full of icy cold water, each kid took turns feeling the water.
Then we sandwiched a tub of Crisco (blubber) in between 2 Ziploc baggies and felt the water again.  This time we had a layer of blubber in between our hand and the icy cold water, and much to our surprise our hand wasn't even cold!  Some even thought it was warmer inside the baggie than in the classroom.
After our science experiment we talked about all the polar animals we knew that had blubber, and we made an Arctic picture of some of our favorites, a polar bear and a walrus!
I think they turned out absolutely adorable!
Then we did some arctic addition with penguins and fish!  The kids got to choose how many fish and penguins they wanted to add to the scene.  Then they wrote their addition sentence.
There were arctic animals everywhere!  There were at the train table!
They were in the sensory tub.  The kids had a blast collecting penguins and counting them out for the correct iceberg!

It was another great week with an awesome group of kids!
